CE-3 PODIUM

FURNITURE DESIGN: COLE SLATER
BUILD: PAOLO MANLUCU

A modular three-tier podium designed as furniture for ceramics to be sat on. The podium can be assorted in numerous ways, but all variations are minimalist, simple, and meant to draw attention to what is placed on the shelves themselves.

PROCESS

Designed by Cole Slater and built by Paolo Manlucu at Studio Plūm. Having collaborated over the past two years, birch plywood was the medium both designers were most familiar with. To add small moments of beauty, we opted for contrast dowels to accentuate the handmade nature of this piece. Then, on each box, inscriptions were CNCed. Using wood glue and concealed screws, we were able to build this shelving unit. We decided to simply sand the plywood and leave it unfinished and not painted in order to convey a natural feeling. We wanted its materiality to call back to the clay ceramics intended to be housed within this modular podium.

MODULARITY

Using simple lines, 90 degree angles, and unique design choices, this three piece unit is fully customizable. Each individual unit can stand on it’s own or it can be connected by being stacked in various manners. Then, each unit can rotate on all axises, where it can appear as a simple box, or a cube with a shelf, or an open faced shelf. This is where the design comes to life.
